They were talking about how girls dress on Halloween, but I think this could also be about what girls wear in general. If some girls feel more comfortable showing a little more skin than others? So be it. If you feel more comfortable covering up? So what. I don't understand why girls obsess over other girls, it's pointless and a waste of time. Ideally though, in a world that has no discrimination, every person could be who they wanted to be, and instead of having their differences being a weakness, it could be their strength. You see, our society has really gotten to the point where we realize that sexism is not okay. We know this, it is ingrained into out minds and we accept it. Not only that, but I daresay the point has been quite driven home to the extent that it doesn't always seem like a fight for equality anymore.
In the first video about Halloween, the girls talk about how sexualized many costumes for girls have become. I will not deny this at all, as it seems that the "sexy" costumes are everywhere. However, to say that this is all that is available is a bit of a stretch. If a girl wants to dress as a monster, by all means, no one is stopping her. There is no one saying that such a costume cannot be worn because it doesn't show off enough body. In fact, it is still not uncommon for exposing too much to be heavily frowned upon, depending on the circumstance. All things considered, despite push from media or society, women dress how they want to, Halloween included. It doesn't really matter who says what in the end but I really don't feel that anyone is being forced to wear something they don't want to.
The video Pretty surprised me a little bit, and I must say I preferred it over the other video. Whether everything the woman in the video said about how her mother treated her as a child was true or not, it's depressing to think about, and certainly no one should be subjected to that. In fact, I'd have to say that this video is more about raising your children correctly that gender equality. If women find themselves searching for meaning in appearance it is not because of advertisements that tell them so; it is because no one of influence in their life has told them there's more to it than that. In the end of the video I found myself agreeing with her; if I have children I will not raise them to believe beauty is more important than anything else. Sure, it is a fact that exists and looms over our heads whether we buy into it or not, but there is so much more to life than being pretty. If I have children, they will know that who you are is so much more about who you chose to be, how you act and how you treat those around you than merely appearance.
I daresay that gender equality has already been reached. Women and men both have equal legal rights, and equal opportunities. Sure, there will still be discrimination, sexualization, and an array of other problems, but our world is not perfect and never will be. There will always be people who slander, there will always be hate and there will always be blatant attacks on morality, defacing what it right and just. Truthfully, almost every social group you can imagine has people that hate that group. I believe we have equality, though this world will never be perfect. It all comes down to what we are willing to do with it; we can choose to hate other, sure. Then again, we can also choose to hate the people who hate others. Or, finally we can choose to love others and hope that we can teach them to do the same. I know my choice.
I told you I'd rock the boat.Sammy Cooperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01295904864262157248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8947082416519818519.post-89773504176800244402013-12-11T23:02:46.724-06:002013-12-11T23:02:46.724-06:00I like second video better. Society classifies pretty as something that cannot be achieved naturally, and girls must be full of fake parts and money according to their standards. There is no one specific combination of attributes that make a person pretty, because everyone is pretty in their own unique way. It's too bad society can't see that.
I would like my children to grow up in a world where the only judgement they are faced with is from God. I don't want them to have to worry about being pretty, or what the mean kids are saying at school. I want them to see their beauty inside and out. Unfortunately, I think that inequality will still exist by then.Rebecca Rogerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12763947521227909301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8947082416519818519.post-74707965049592096022013-12-11T19:51:24.319-06:002013-12-11T19:51:24.319-06:00I liked the "Pretty" video better. So often we feel like 'if only I could do this to myself' or 'if only I looked like.." It's disgusting. They were very passionate about their topic and I feel that with the fact that people can connect on a better level when a message comes from a means that people can relate to is the reason that the first video got more response from the girls in both classes.
I want my children to grow up in a world where they know their worth and that being "pretty" doesn't mean anything. Sure it might mean you get boys in high school but once those four years have passed and you didn't care enough about school to retain any information that will help you in the real world, you'll have no one. Also I feel inequality will always be around but it's how we handle it that makes the difference. If we say that women are going to change the world and start believing in our selves, one day we will. That's the world I want my kids to grow up knowing. They were both very good, but she simply had more passion and emotion in her voice. It was a topic that I strongly related to, because it often feels as if women are not valued for much beyond their appearance.

I'd love for my theoretical children to grow up in a world where they can feel valued for all that they are and not confined by a small word like "pretty" or a skimpy Halloween costume. I want them to grow up in a world where people are comfortable with sexuality and there is more room between the words "slut" and "prude."

I think there's a possibility inequality may disappear. It will take a very long time, but the chance is there. We've eliminated many issues - for example, women have the right to vote, which was not always the case - but with that, inequality has just become more subtle, making it harder to notice and fight against. selenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16663563345611190302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8947082416519818519.post-20334424291725696962013-12-11T14:44:03.639-06:002013-12-11T14:44:03.639-06:00I do think there still will be gender inequality a...I do think there still will be gender inequality as it has been her for ever! I am noticing more and more in today's society the need that girls feel to look and dress a certain way. Men and women are both be objectified in the media, but women are definitely treated more like objects. I notice this even in school, which is extremely sad. Why am I seeing girls boobs and stomachs and camel toes at school?! It is minus 40 outside! I do not feel it is necessary for girls to reveal their bodies... Especially at school. I know I do not want to live in a world like this, so why would I want my children to? I would hate for my daughter to feel objectified and feel the need to look or dress a certain way to impress a man. I understand that generally everyone wants sex, but honestly, it doesn't need to be shown on the outside, especially when it's in a professional space like school or work. Men need to stop buying into this sick idea and girls need to stop giving in.
