TBL Project

So, we're working on our lists, now what? Based on the suggestions you submitted last week on Cre8tive Havoc, here's what we've come up with. You will be creating your own version of The Buried Life! Here's what it will contain:

(1) An Author's Note written by you (250 words). See the author's note in TBL book for an example of what this should sound like.

(2) Your list of 50-100 items.

(3) "Visual" representations of 25 items. Get creative here! Use all the tools you've developed this semester. Think about how doodling, word/pic mashups, newspaper blackout, post it notes, signs, twitter, could be potential "visual" mediums for your list items. However, feel free to use which ever mediums you feel most comfortable with (video for instance). Also consider the ways in which TBL visually shares items on their list (t-shirts, signs, on Penelope).  All visuals must be orginals created by you.

(4) "Now What" a written discussion of how you will/or have attacked one item on the list (250 words)

(5) Presentation to the class (on the 21/22/23 of January) other details TBA

Reading & Writing Reflection #10

For this week's reflection I would like you to think about your experiences with Twitter Fiction.

From a writing perspective:
- How did writing your Twitter Fiction go?  What were your successes? What were your fustrations?  - What did you learn about yourself as a writer?
- How did you feel about "publishing" yourself on Twitter?

From a reading perspective:
- Which Twitter Fictions did you read? Why?
- How did it feel to spend Thursday's class "reading" Twitter?
- Was there anything that surprised you?

About Twitter:
- Did this assignment change your perspective of Twitter? How? Why?
- What other ways could we use Twitter

Exploring the #Twitterfiction of Others

Today we will be taking some time to explore the Twitter Fiction of others.

First, I would like you take a look at the Twitter Fiction that your classmates have posted.  Find their Twitter feed, follow tham and Tweet them your questions, comments, observations by using  @___________ at the beginning of your tweet.

Second I would like you to explore the authors selected by Twitter to be part of the festival.  Select at least one author/story concept that you think you would enjoy, follow that author's Twitter feed, and read their fiction throughout the festival.  If you feel brave enough, Tweet the author with a question or comment, I'ms sure they'd be thrilled to hear from you!

http://blog.twitter.com/2012/11/twitter-fiction-festival-selections.html

Monday's reading reflection will be based on the Twitter reading that you have done.  So be sure to take notes on your questions, comments, predictions and connections, so they stay fresh for Monday.

At the end of class, please come back here to Cre8tiveHavoc and post a comment below discussing:

- Which classmates Twitter Ficiton you really enjoyed and why.
- Which Festival sponsored authors you plan to follow/read and why.
- Other comments, observations about your day in the Twittersphere.

Writing Reflection #9- Twitter Fiction Check- In

In today's class I would like you to focus in on your Twitter Fiction.

(1) First thirty minutes, I would like you to spend the class typing up your Twitter Fiction in a Word document. You do not need to post it yet, but I think the process of typing your first draft will help with the proofreading of the story. Feel free to break your story into chapters, with chapter titles, if this works for you. Remember to keep each Tweet as a stand alone paragraph.  If you are unsure about the formatting, look to"Russet" as an example.

(2) Second thirty minutes of class, I would like you to post an update on how your Twitter Fiction is going.  (300+ words)

- Take a picture of your rough draft story boards, and post them on your blog
- Then discuss how close to "done" are you?  How many Tweets  /30 have you written? What type of story(ies) did you choose to tell, a VSS, an etended story, something in between? Why did you select that style of Twitter Fiction?  What elements from the "to do"list  do you have left to include? Have you thought about the images/pics you are going to include with your story?  What has worked well in your story? What still needs work?  What questions/comments do you have about this writing project so far?

Choose Your Own Adventure Day!

I thought I'd give you today's class to wander around the blogosphere!  Here are some options for today's adventure:

(1) Update your blog with personal additions!  Look at the links listed under the Cre8tive Havoc title, at the the top of the blog.  They might provide some inspiration.

(2) Visit your classmates blogs, nosey around, add some comments. Find some cre*tivity.

(3) Open a Word Document and start typing your Twitter Fiction.  Cut, paste, move things around.  Start to get an idea for what story(ies) you want to tell.

** What ever adventure you choose, come back here to Cre8tive Havoc at the end of today's class, and add a comment to this post, discussing what you did this class to cre8te.

Twitter Fiction: To Do List

Despite the fact that we are writing different types of twitter Fiction, with different plot lines, we can ensure that we have some basic writing element in common:

- You must have at least 20 Tweets worth of story
- You can write a VSS or a multi-Tweet story, or a combination thereof
- *One example visual, and auditory and kinesthetic, and smell and taste imagery.
- *Three Tweets worth of Character Development
- *Two Tweets worth of Dialogue
- *One Tweet with a clear "So What"
- *Five original Twitter pics to accompany your fiction

The elements listed with a * accompanying them, with be discussed in class via mini lessons.
Please keep in mind that the above listed amounts are minimums, I encourage you to use these elements freely (but with purpose) to tell your stories.

Our Next Project . . .Twitter Fiction

In honor of Twitter's upcoming "Twitter Fiction Festival" our next writing project as a class is going to be Twitter Fiction. There are two common types of Twitter Fiction:

(1) THE VSSAS- The "Very Short Stand Alone Story", is one story in 140 characters or less. Beginning, middle, end, all in one tweet.

examples here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2012/oct/15/twitter-fiction-your-stories

(2) The Extended Story- One story, told through a series of tweets, but still limited to 140 characters per tweet.

example here:
http://russet-one-wing.blogspot.ca/

So which type of story are you going to tell?

Characteristics of Twitter Fiction

Rough draft of Jennifer Eagan's Twitter Fiction Story "Black Box"

Characteristics of Twitter Fiction

·      A story told via a twitter tweet/feed

·      140 characters or less (including spaces)

·      May contain complete or fragmented sentences

·      Contains imagery, language the appeals to the senses

·      Acts as a “stand alone” idea, meaning it makes sense by itself, BUT

·      Might be one in a series of tweets telling a story.

·      Uses the hash tags #twitterfiction #twister #vss #140novel

Just a Writing Reflection

Hello Everyone!

I was working in the office on Friday, and many of you were away at the University presentation (good for you!) and today I am away at the Manitoba Teacher's Society.  I will be back tomorrow, and when we will be wrapping up your Newspaper Blackout Poetry. But for today we are going to do something different.  This week you are just going to do a Writing Reflection on the three topics listed below.

Writing Reflection (500 words)
This week's writing reflection is going to be a bit different.

(1) Given all of the "post high school" thinking we have been doing these days (Mrs. Trenholm from Guidance came to present, the university and college presentations), discuss the specific ways you can use your blog to help you pursue your goals after high school.  Keep in mind that everybody has different goals for after graduation (job, apprenticeship/internships, travel, scholarships, university, college). So how can you use your blog to achieve your goals?

(2)I would like you to visit 3 classmates blogs, and leave meaningful and significant comments that encourage a discussion. When you leave a comment, I want you to cut and copy the page specific blog address/URL and post it in your blog as part of your Writing Reflection.

(3) I also want you to discuss how the process of commenting went:
  • Where did you leave comments? Why did you select that post to comment on?
  • What are the characteristics of a "good" comment?
  • What are the characteristics of a "bad" comment?
  • What are some benefits to commenting on other people's blogs?
  • What are the benefits to receiving comments on your blog?

So this week's Writing Reflection would look like this:
Weekly Reflection #6

Question#1

Question #2

Question #3

The first comment I posted was on Ryan's blog. The reason why I posted a comment is because his discussion of superheroes got my really thinking. Why do we as a society have superheroes, and what do they reflect about our values? Even more exciting, what super power would you have if you were a superhero? Why? I think that by commenting on Rayn's blog, we can take a relatively every day topic like superheroes, and start to think about how society works and why . . .
The second comment I posted was . . . .
The third comment I posted was . . .

Yowzer! We've been busy!

I'm just in the process of going through the blogs to mark individual assignments, and I realised just how busy we've been this semester.  Many people are keeping up just fine, but it looks like many of you could use a class to just make sure that all your assignments have been posted, and that your blogs are up to date.  SOOOO, today is that class!  We are pushing the pause button on Reading/Writing  Reflections this week and instead we are having a catch up class.  See me for a list of all the assignments thus far this semester, at off you go!

Austin Kleon Likes Us!

Tuesday, 9 October 2012

Weekly Reading Reflection #5

Name the ficitonal character that would have this iPhone in their pocket:

Now it's your turn to get creative!  Your Reading Reflection for this week is to design an iPhone with ten apps that are specifically created for a character in the book you are reading. Each app must be accompanied by a two sentence discussion of what the app is, and how it is useful to the character. You will also need to design a skin or case for the back of the phone that connects to the character's personality/interests.

Once you've created your iPhone apps and a case, be sure to take a pic and post it on your blog.

"Creativity is Subtraction"

I recently heard about Newspaper Blackout Poetry, and thought we should give it a spin in Creative Writing class.

Here's two videos to give somebackground:

A sample of Austin Kleon's Blackout Poetry:
Creative Writing 101- By Austin Kleon

Some links to explore:

So here we go!
  • You are going to create a trio of Newspaper Blackout Poetry.
  • All poems in the trio must relate to one another through a common theme.
  • Each poem must have a title.
  • Your poems are going to be displayed in three ways: On the walls in the hallway, on your blog, and submitted to Austin Kleon's blog.
Ready, set, blackout!

Blogging Field Trip!

Well ladies and gentlemen, you've all been working hard to establish your own little piece of the blogosphere. In today's class we will be taking a cyber field trip, to the blogs of your fellow classmates. Take some time today to explore the blogs of your classmates, investigate what they've been doing, and contribute to their blogging learning, by posting comments.  While everyone needs a cheerleader, please ensure that your comments are more than "great job". Instead, try ask questions, and start conversations.  Make sure you pay particular attention the newly posted "Six Word Memoir" projects as well.

Not sure where to start? Visit the sidebar (--->)to see your fellow students blogs, select a blog that looks interesting and off you go!

While you are off visiting other blogs, use the chatroom posted below to keep the class conversation going, post links to other students blogs, and invite people to yours:

http://todaysmeet.com/havoc

?? Ms. McLauchlan- How many comments should I post?  Well, you have all class! But the blogging rule of thumb is for every item you have posted on your own blog, you comment on at least two other people's blogs.

Reading and Writing Reflection #4

Reading Reflection (250 words):
Use your post it notes to help you create a posting where you discuss your reading progress last week.

- Your reflection should be in full sentences/paragraphs, and focus on your questions, comments, predictions and text connections.

- Please don't retell the plot of your novel, instead react to it.

Writing Reflection (200 words):
Your 6 "Six Word Memoirs" are due tomorrow, so let's take a minute to reflect on the process!

- How did it go? Was it an "easy" or "hard" assignment? Why?
- What did you learn about this microform of writing?
- What surprised you about the project?
- Which part of the project did you prefer? Writing the words or creating the visuals? Why?
- What did you learn about yourself as a reader/writer/thinker/creator?
- Comments/concerns/sources of confusion regarding the course so far?

Finishing Up Six Word Memoirs

It seems we are coming to the end of our work with "6 Word Memoirs", and that means that we need to finish polishing and editing, and publish them for the world to see! Exciting right? Ok here's what you need to know:

(3) Each of these 6 "Six Word Memoirs" must be posted as seperate entry, on your blog by  Tuesday,October 2nd .

(4) A "published" photo MUST HAVE a photgraphy credit either on the picture or as a caption underneath the photo. You've take the photo yourself, you must have a photo credit.

(5) Each photo "Six Word Memoir" must have a Writer's Note attached to it. The Writer's Note is your opportunity to explain your process for writing the six words, as wells as how you selected the photo and how it connects to the six words. Each writers note must be 100 words in length

Editing Pictures and Adding Text

The best free site I have found  (so far) for editing pictures and adding text to them is www.picmonkey.com .

When editing your photos please make sure:

- The font colour and size you select is easy to read against the background of the image
- You add a photo credit/created by credit in the bottom right hand corner of your image
- Just to be safe, you e-mail your final edited picture to yourself and you save them on your folder on the net work.

Weekly Reading and Writing Reflection #3

Reading Reflection (250 words):
Use your post it notes to help you create a posting where you discuss your reading progress.

- Your reflection should be in full sentences/paragraphs, and focus on your questions, comments, predictions and text connections.

- Please don't retell the plot of your novel, instead react to it.

Reflect on the writing we did in class last week.

Six Word Memoirs:
- How did it go?
- Did you choose to stay in the classroom? Or go to solitary confinement? Why? How did it go?
- What do you think of this genre of writing? Pros? Cons?

Anything else you've discovered about yourself as a writer/thinker?

Six Word Memoirs

The first writing style we will be focussing on is a microform called six word memoirs. For those of you who haven't heard of this writing phenomenon, here's a short video to explain:

Your writing assignment:

-Write 8 different six word memoirs. One for each of the eight categories: love, hate, growing up, my past, my future, me, family, and confession.
- Select your best SIX and create visuals (photos, drawings/doodles, collages) to accompany them.
- All visuals accompanying your Six Word Memoirs must by originals, created by you.

Due Date: TBA

Personal Additions

Your blog and  WRN should be an extension of you and reflect your personality in a professional manner.  The best way to accomplish is through personal additions!

Personal additions are your chance to include items you find inspiring, interesting, and/or worth commenting on into your blog and WRN. Items that could be considered personal additions include (but are not limited to):
·      Poems/Song Lyrics
·      A list of confession
·      A list of inspirational quotes
·      “I know for sure that . . .”
·      A sketch of a character/scene from your novel
·      Consider “big questions”
·      To you, what is love?
·      What would be your priority if you wanted to repair the world.
·      What would you like to never end?
·      Write a letter to your future self.
·      Rant
·      Comment on an interesting article in the newspaper, or a magazine.
·      React to a piece of art/music.  .  .
·      Post- movie reflection

TWO NOTES OF CAUTION!
(1) Give credit where credit is due! Always credit the creator and/or original source of the item. If it is an item you found on the Internet, always add the URL of the original source, and give the name of the person who created/wrote the item. If you wrote/created it, then give yourself props! Remember, claiming someone else's work as your own is considered plagiarism!

URL Shortener:

(2)Cut, paste and think.  Don’t leave your addition on its own; add your own commentary to the item. If you just cut and paste, the item seems random and unconnected to your blog/WRN as a whole.

Updating Your Blog

Now that we've made blogs, it's time we start filling them with content!

(1)The first thing we posted was an introductory post or our rambling autobiography.

(2)Next type and post your Reading Reflection #2:

- Remember to start your post with:

Reading Reflection #2

Book: Lone Wolf
Author: Jodi Picoult
Pages Read: 35-74

(3)Third, take a picture of your Digital Footprint and post it on your blog with a short paragraph discussing the content of your doodle.

Reading Reflection #2

It's that time of the week again!

 Reading Reflection (350 words):
Use your post it notes to help you create a posting where you discuss your reading progress.

- Your reflection should be in full sentences/paragraphs, and focus on your questions, comments, predictions and text connections.
- Please don't retell the plot of your novel, instead react to it.
- Dont' Forget to share your questions, comments, predictions and text connections.

Digital Footprint Doodle

Although this is a Creative Writing class, sometimes I think of it as a Creative Ways of Writing class. It is with that in mind that I introduce Sunni Brown and her passion for doodling.

In today's class what we are going to think and doodle about is the concept of our digital footprint. According to Wikipedia a digital footprint is;
  • A trail left by an entity's interactions in a digital environment; including their usage of TV, mobile phone, Internet and world wide web, mobile web and other devices and sensors. Digital footprints provide data on what an entity has performed in the digital environment; and are valuable in assisting behavioural targeting, personalisation, targeted marketing, digital reputation, and other social media or social graphing services.
  • In social media, a digital footprint is the size of an individuals online presence; as it relates to the number of individuals they interact with.
  • A collection of activities and behaviours recorded when an entity (such as a person) interacts in a digital environment. It may include the recording of activities such as system login and logouts, visits to a web-page, accessed or created files, or emails and chat messages. The digital footprint allows interested parties to access this data; possibly for data mining, or profiling purposes.
So here is your writing mission-
1. Doodle about your digital footprint! Things to doodle about:
  • Your doodle interpretation of the Wikipedia definition above
  • Doodle what your digital footprint looks like. How deep is it your footprint? What is in it? Is it "muddy"?
  • Doodle about how can you use your digital footprint as springboard to your future endeavours?
  • Doodle about anything else that comes to mind when thinking about your digital footprint

Welcome to Creative (Ways of) Writing!

Hello and welcome to Cre8tive Havoc, the "mother blog" for our class's adventure into blogging! This will be a common space for all students taking Creative Writing this year, so don't be suprised if you see some new names and faces here. This mother blog will be a place where various assignments and resources will be posted. My hope is that you will be checking is here on a regular basis while also maintaining your own blog, and visiting the blogs of your fellow classmates

Reading Reflection #1

Welcome to your First (of many) Reading Reflections!

For the sake of organising your future blogs, I just want to  discuss some formatting details for your weekly Reading Reflection (350 words). Please title your assignment with "Reading Reflection #___" and then use the first three lines  to give info about the name of the book, author, and pages you've read this week in class. So for example your Reading Reflection assignment should look something like this:

Reading Reflection #1

Book: Lone Wolf
Author: Jodi Picoult
Pages Read: 1-35

Also, when it comes to the content of your Reading Reflection, remember to avoid retelling plot.

Instead try to use the reading strategies that we've been studying this semester. Write about your:
-Questions
-Comments

-General observations about writing style

** For this week you can also discuss how the act of reading felt;  Did the hour of reading on Friday just zip by? Or did you find your mind wandering?  How was using post it notes? How many did you use in the hour of reading? How could they potentially be useful?

Wondering what this assignment should look like? Check out these ones, written by former students!

Thursday

Thursday- Catching Up on Missing Assignments

Laptop cart is here!

(1) Catch Up on Incomplete Assignments:

 - Your progress report shows INC or NHI for any incomplete assignments.  Once you complete a missing assignment you must highlight it on your progress report, so that I know if has been completed. Progress reports with highlight must be handed in by the end of the day Friday.  The substitute will collect them all and hand them to me, so that I can update your mark.

(2) Making your blog look awesome:

- We still need to give you blogs a final assessment. So please make sure that you have done your best to make it look awesome! I would recommend that you look at Ryan’s blog (http://ryanbruce45.blogspot.ca/) or Criz’s blog (http://crizelyneve.blogspot.ca/) for solid examples of awesome looking blogs.

Consider the following:

·       Create a post detailing the names of all the books you’ve read this semester. Be sure to include the tile, author, and five start rating you’d give it

·       Add a twitter feed gadget to your blog so that if feeds all your Buried Life posts to your blog! If you don’t know how to do this, GOOGLE IT! Or ask Nathalie Massaroni how to do it, she’s got one on her blog (http://nathaliejm.blogspot.ca/)

·       Update the “book I am currently reading” and “books I just finished” gadgets on your blog.

·       Make sure you’ve added all the pics and vids of your Buried Life Project

·       By now you blog should have between 25-30 personal additions.  Make sure you got that many and that you’ve given them a number in the title of the post.

*******  Give your blog a final mark:

Make a post on your blog were you give your blog a final percentage grade, and discuss in five or more sentences why you think your blog deserves that grade.  What did you do this semester, to make your blog and extension of your thinking, reading, and writing? What makes your blog interesting/unique? What could you have improved on?

A Note From Ms. McLauchlan

Hello class,

You all have a very busy week ahead of you, despite the fact that I am away.  The sub will give you a paper copy of the daily breakdown of work, but it will also be posted on http://cre8tivehavoc.blogspot.ca .  The daily instructions are fairly clear but if you have any questions, feel free to tweet at me  (@cre8tivehavoc), or e-mail me (tmclauchlan@sjsd.net) and I will respond fairly quickly. I will be away all week, but will be back on Monday, June 18th, which is the last day of classes.  Yes, you have to come to class that day, but I wouldn’t argue if you all wanted to bring some snacks!  Also please make sure you return any books you’ve borrowed this semester.  Just put a post it note with your name on the cover of the book and put it on the front desk.

Thanks,
Ms. McLauchlan

Twitter Challenge Week Two!

Last week's Twitter challenge was to Tweet at a "famous" person to get them to share their bucket list items. Remember that this challenge might require some polite persistence. You might have to Tweet at them multiple times before you get a response.

This week's Twitter challenge is to invite friends and family to join our bucket list conversation. Be strategic in who you invite, make sure it's a person who will contribute positively to the conversation. Have them Tweet an item or two @cre8tivehavoc and @you. I may even be convinced to award bonus marks for participating in this challenge!
