"Creativity is Subtraction"

#newspaperblackoutpoetry #austinkleon  #engchat #mbedu

I recently heard about Newspaper Blackout Poetry, and thought we should give it a spin in Creative Writing class.

Here's two videos to give some background:

A sample of Austin Kleon's Blackout Poetry:
Creative Writing 101- By Austin Kleon

Some links to explore:

So here we go!
  • You are going to create a trio of Newspaper Blackout Poetry.
  • All poems in the trio must relate to one another through a common theme.
  • Each poem must have a title.
  •
Ready, set, blackout!

Weekly Reflection #4-

Writing Reflection:

Your 6 "Six Word Memoirs" are now due, so let's take a minute to reflect on the process! (200 words)

- How did it go? Was it an "easy" or "hard" assignment? Why?
- What did you learn about this microform of writing?
- What surprised you about the project?
- Which part of the project did you prefer? Writing the words or creating the visuals? Why?
- What did you learn about yourself as a reader/writer/thinker/creator?
- Comments/concerns/sources of confusion regarding the course so far?

Last week we had a "blogging fieldtrip", where we visited and commented on the blogs of other students.  Tell me about how that went! (200 words)
  • Where did you leave comments? Why did you select that post to comment on?
  • What are the characteristics of a "good" comment?
  • What are the characteristics of a "bad" comment?
  • What are some benefits to commenting on other people's blogs?
  • What are the benefits to receiving comments on your blog?

Reading Reflection:

How goes the book? Share your quesitons, comments, predictions and text connections. (100 words)

Making Blogging Connections

#engchat #mbedu #blogging #educhat #edchat

It's always great to see the connections we make via our blogs. Yesterday I asked you all to visit http://200awesomedays.blogspot.ca/ , a blog built and maintained by Mrs. Malkoske and her grade 1 & 2 class at Dr. FWL Hamilton School. While many of you explored their posts and left comments, I sent a Tweet to their teacher letting her know what we were up to. Mrs. Malkoske's students were thrilled to see the comments left by high school kids! This is an instagram photo taken by their teacher, Mrs. Malkoske, as they explored our blogs and left comments!

Blogging Field Trip

# engchat #edchat #blogging-

Well ladies and gentlemen, you've all been working hard to establish your own little piece of the blogosphere. In today's class we will be taking a cyber field trip, to the blogs of your fellow classmates. Take some time today to explore the blogs of your classmates, investigate what they've been doing, and contribute to their blogging learning, by posting comments. While everyone needs a cheerleader, please ensure that your comments are more than "great job". Instead, try ask questions, and start conversations. Make sure you pay particular attention the newly posted "Six Word Memoir" projects as well.

Not sure where to start? Visit the sidebar (--->)to see your fellow students blogs, select a blog that looks interesting and off you go!

While you are off visiting other blogs, use the chatroom posted below to keep the class conversation going, post links to other students blogs, and invite people to yours:

?? Ms. McLauchlan- How many comments should I post? Well, you have all class! But the blogging rule of thumb is for every item you have posted on your own blog, you comment on at least two other people's blogs.

Finishing Up- Six Word Memoirs

#engchat #sixwordmemoirs -

It seems we are coming to the end of our work with "6 Word Memoirs", and that means that we need to finish polishing and editing, and publish them for the world to see! Exciting right? Ok, here's what you need to know:

(1) You must have 8 of your "Six Word Memoirs" for publishing.

(2) E-mail each of your finished  8 "Six Word Memoirs" to the class Flickr account:
not48effect@photos.flickr.com

(3) Each of these 8 "Six Word Memoirs" must be posted as separate entry, on your blog by Tuesday, March 12 .

(4) A "published" photo MUST HAVE a photography credit either on the picture or as a caption underneath the photo. You've take the photo yourself, you must have a photo credit.

(5) Each photo "Six Word Memoir" must have a Writer's Note attached to it. The Writer's Note is your opportunity to explain your process for writing the six words, as wells as how you selected the photo and how it connects to the six words. Each writer's note must be 100 words in length.

Things to write about in your Writer's Note:

(1) How does the image and the words fit together?
(2) What editing techniques did you performed on the photo? Why?
(3) How did you use punctuation to clarify your message?
(4) Discuss your font: color, style, placement. How was it appropriate for the text and image?

See postings below for examples and inspiration:

Combining Visuals with Text

#sixwordmemoirs  #picmonkey  #engchat
 -
Now that you've written your six word memoirs, and have gathered the visuals you would like to use to represent them, we need to combine everything together. The best free site I have found (so far) for editing pictures and adding text to them is www.picmonkey.com

When editing your photos please make sure:

- The font colour and size you select is easy to read against the background of the image
- You add a photo credit/created by credit in the bottom right hand corner of your image
- Just to be safe, post the images on your blog, AND  e-mail your final edited picture to yourself AND you save them to your folder on the network.
