Solitary Confinement

For today's class you will be working on your writing project.  If you have selected to do Newspaper Blackout Poetry, you should be "shopping for images" to help you create your trio of poems.  If you have selected to do Social Fiction, then you should be looking for a story seed (consider your story molecules, or the IO9 visual prompts we explored in class yesterday).  at the end of class you will be coming back to the room to post a comment here that addresses the following two questions:

(1) What did you do/write/create today?
(2) What did you learn (About yourself, your story, your writing, etc.)

Today I completed the first page of my newspaper blackout. It was challenging but it was fun creating a new story to the already made print.
I learned that challenges like these can be fun, and I think that the more challenging something is the more creative you tend to get and finished product looks better.

(1) Today I read some examples of Social Fiction's created by last semesters students to try to decide which project I'm going to do.

(2) I realized that I can do both, each of them will need the same amount of work, but I still don't know which one I'm going to choose.

1. I came up with the "so what" to keep trying for my newspaper blackout. I came up with 3 poems but I'm not sure if I really like them, or I feel like I could do better.

2. I learned that I can get very distracted because instead of looking for words to use in my poem I was reading the pages. Which kind of screwed up my thought process. I would have an idea but then I would start reading the story and lose my train of thought.

1.Today in class I completed 2 newspaper blackouts. I thought it was easier then I thought it would be and I enjoyed doing it. I think having the peace and quit definitely helped me to finish my work.
2. I learned a few things during this class. The first one was, you can take any peace of paper with words or a story on it, and completely change the meaning of what was already written. I think that is pretty cool. It was neat to follow along with the old story, while staying focused on the new poem I was making.

Today I completed three different, short newspaper blackout poetry. They are all generally horrible and I will be working on new ones following this class.
I learnt that newspaper blackout poetry is for sure not as easy as it looks, and that I'm not very good at it. I think I'll get better with more practice. But right now it's very difficult

I decided today I was going to do blackout poetry. I thought it was going to be really hard but once I started it started flowing. I created two blackout poems today but I did not black it out yet. I learned that I always second guess myself. I thought at the beginning I wasn't going to be able to do this because I suck at poetry. I realize now it's not really as complicated as the average poem is. I really enjoy blackout poetry.

Today, I finished working on a personal post for the blackout poetry and posted it to my blog. Afterward I began looking at book pages, and newspapers to try to work a poem out for myself. It's definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. I didn't finish mine yet, but it was a fairly good start.
I definitely learned that what I percieve as being "easy," is not always easy. I have a feeling that this project is going to take more than just a little bit of time for myself.

So today I made three rough newspaper blackout poems which this far I have really enjoyed. At first I stumbled a little in getting inspiration but after I found some words that popped out it was easy to make a story. I really like the idea of taking someone else words and turning them into your words. In general I am happy with what I got accomplished and can't wait to continue to be creative with this format of writing. I learned that I can tell a story with words that aren't mine, but still be personal to me, which is super cool.

I spent my alone time working on my blackout newspaper poetry. I was able to complete two poems but I don't think one is very appropriate. Although it was fun to see what I could come up with from a random article. I learned that I always seem to be thinking about love both of my poems were about love which I found was about weird. I work pretty good when I'm not talking to anyone and once I got into it I didn't find it that challenging to make a decent poem using this style

1) Today I made the decision to write a short story instead of doing Newspaper Blackout Poetry. Although I would like to try Newspaper Blackout Poetry I decided to write a story instead because I feel like it will be more versatile and challenge me in a different way. I also like the idea of creating a social media account that aligns with my story. I have a general idea of what I would like my story to be about and how I will present the main message. I have even begun to write the first paragraph. My story will be about a teenage writer that struggles with her identity and finding her voice. Usually when I write I start with one idea and it morphs into something else later on. I like to let the story unwind on its own since I can never seem to plan the plot. I do know I would like to use a male character, possibly a friend to influence the main character. As of this moment the story is in the first person narrative and written in the style of a journal entry.

2) I learned that although I enjoy writing, I struggle with self-criticism and lack motivation. Many times I will come up with an idea for a story or a poem and I will began to write it or sometimes even finish it when I decide that it hasn't gone in the direction I'd like. It's most likely the fact that I am very self conscious about my writing abilities because many of the things I write are so personal that I haven't even considered sharing them. In other instances I'll convince myself that the ideas in a written piece were generally not creative or overused. If there is one thing I can't stand in my own writing it is adhering to stereotypes and using too many clichés. I think my high standards for myself will be a challenge for me in this writing task.

1) I worked on Blackout Poetry. I finished working on three different pieces that I may or may not use for this project. I still have to black out everything, but for now I'm just using pencil.
2) I learned that this is actually a difficult process. I'm always tempted to read the article rather than skim through it. Although to do feel accomplished finishing about three of these, it's not as easy as I figured it would be.

1. Today I nearly finished one of my newspaper blackout poems. I have all of my words chosen, and now all I need to do is black out the rest.

2. Instead of outlining many interesting words and then seeing what I have to work with, I tend to outline just a couple or a few at the beginning, and then search the rest of the article for words that would take the poem in the direction I want. The whole process takes a lot longer than I would have thought.

1) Today Mark and I got out our main plot line as well as main characters and other things that will happen within the short story.

2) I learned that mark and I are very creative when coming up with ideas because we both think similar when it comes to interesting stories.

We came up with out plotline and the types of characters we are going to have in out story.
I learnt that it is easier to have ideas flow when working with someone to share ideas back and forth with eachother.

Today, I came up with what I'm going to write for my short story. I choose my main characters and have started to write my rough draft of my short story.
I learned that it's very difficult writing a short story because everyone has a tendency of wanting to write more .

Today in class I finished my first newspaper blackout piece that I started yesterday. I also started my second piece. The two are completely different from one another, which is cool to see the different ways that words can form different themes.

One thing I learned was not to drag my hand through the sharpie.. What I learnt about myself is that I really enjoy newspaper blackouts and I feel that it is something that I will continue doing in the future. I've never been much of a 'creative' person, but I feel like this is one creative thing that I actually really enjoy doing.
