Digital Ethics

Blogging is a very public activity. Anything that gets posted on the internet stays there. Forever. Deleting a post simply removes it from the blog it was posted to. Copies of the post may exist scattered all over the internet. That is why we are being so careful to respect your privacy and using first names only. We do not use pictures of ourselves. If you really want a graphic image associated with your posting use an avatar -- a picture of something that represents you but IS NOT of you.

(1)Students using blogs are expected to treat blogspaces as classroom spaces. Speech that is inappropriate for class is not appropriate for our blog. While we encourage you to engage in debate and conversation with other bloggers, we also expect that you will conduct yourself in a manner reflective of a representative of this school.
(2)Never EVER EVER give out or record personal information on our blog. Our blog exists as a public space on the Internet. Don’t share anything that you don’t want the world to know. For your safety, be careful what you say, too. Don’t give out your phone number or home address. This is particularly important to remember if you have a personal online journal or blog elsewhere.
(3)Again, your blog is a public space. And if you put it on the Internet, odds are really good that it will stay on the Internet. Always. That means ten years from now when you are looking for a job, it might be possible for an employer to discover some really hateful and immature things you said when you were younger and more prone to foolish things. Be sure that anything you write you are proud of. It can come back to haunt you if you don’t.
(4) Never link to something you haven’t read. While it isn’t your job to police the Internet, when you link to something, you should make sure it is something that you really want to be associated with. If a link contains material that might be creepy or make some people uncomfortable, you should probably try a different source.

Look over the guidelines and discuss the ones you like in the comments section below this post. We'll be using the one's I highlighted above as a basis for how we will use our blog.

I have never thought about future employers checking out what I have been doing prior to applying for a position. It seems creepy to me, but it is certainly possible.

The fact that technology can reduce the possiblities of you getting a job, really shows how technology has changed a person's privacy over time, and how dangerous it could be.

It's crazy how much of your information stays online after you think that you've gotten rid of it, and how much it can effect your life years later.

The fact that everything i've ever shared on the internet can be viewed puplicly forever really creeps me out. From now on i'm going to be a lot more careful with the things and information I share.

I usually don't post very personal things on the internet because I already knew that once you put something on the internet you can't take it off so I'm careful with that!

I've never been one to share super personal things on the internet because I don't like the idea of people that I don't know knowing certain things about me. But, I agree with the comments above about how concerning it is that future employers are able to access and judge us upon things that we've said and posted over the internet in the past. I think that it's also really concerning that things we delete on the internet still stay there even after they're deleted. I know that I am going to be even more careful from this point on about what I say or post on the internet!

Knowing alll this actually scares me so much I never really posted anything in the past that should come back to haunt me. But it is scary knowing any one can view me or my things.

Its a scary thing to think about things you posted, and maybe deleted never really go away. You get into this mindset that it wont be out there forever, its scary to realize that all these things are floating around in cyber space for anyone to find.

I always knew that what you said online could affect you in the future, but I wasn't aware just how deep it went. I'll be sure to keep information to myself and not write it all over the internet!

A lot of people dont realise how public the internet is. Everyday I see posts on Facebook I know kids are going to regret. I work very hard to make sure I give the right impression over the internet. I use many networking sites, like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube to promtoe myself as an artist. I know that on wrong post and I could blow my chances. It's really good to have reminders like this and to inform the less informed.

I've been pretty careful with what I put out there, but it's still pretty frightening to think that the things you post can come back to haunt you in the future when you least expect it. I think you would all agree that certain internet-users need to be educated about that.

Its pretty unbelievable that no matter if you delete a post you had made, it will still be there on the internet. Its kind of scary to think that the things i could post could come back to haunt me. I never thought an employer would look me up to find information about me. I agree with everything that was posted above that we need to be careful about what we post on the internet cause we never know where it might end up!

This class is kind of making me nervous, maybe that's why noone would hire me from all the bad stuff. Although I changed it around and got rid of more bad and put in more good this now tells me it never goes away, that's scary. I wish I was going through school back then,so that internet and cellphones and digital footprints didnt even exist.:(

When I think about it, it's pretty crazy how big the internet is and how easily things can be passed around and seen by many people. I'm glad I've never really put anything personal on the internet because who knows who might see it. I've always thought if you regretted posted something, you could just delete it and it would be gone but I've realised that's not true. Just because you deleted it, doesn't mean someone else hasn't seen it and passed it on to someone else. It's really important to think twice before you post something on the internet.

It's amazing how there are some people out there in the world that would do that sort of thing. However, it's always good to know the truth about some people out there. Knowing this, I will be more conscious with what gets posted. It's better to be save than sorry!

This is a little Scary. People don't think before putting things on the Internet most of the time . I know for suremim going to be more careful before putting things online. It's crazy how once you put one thing on its there forever and anyone could access it.thats really something to think about.

It's a bit unnerving knowing that future employers might be checking out my online profiles... Other than that I don't really mind. I think it's mostly common sense not to go posting your address, etc. all over the internet.
Although I do suppose that everybody (including me) probably has at least one thing that they regret putting out there for the world to see.

It's definately scary that things you post on the internet may never go away. After reading about this I am definately going to check my privacy settings. Knowing that anyone could look you up and share what you have posted is very weird.

Before I even got facebook, some of the people I know, who hire others, told me about how they look people up on social networks. By looking up their social networks pages they will come to a conclusion on who is hired due to that. So I have always been rather careful on what I add or what others post of me. I also make sure I am careful what is posted because I have family members, coaches, etc. who would be able to see those posts.

that is really crazy how you can be tracked on the internet and you don't even have to be a computer hacker, all you need is google which is really freaky and it's just really unsettling how you can be tracked, even managers could check out your profiles which is unsettling too because a lot of online profiles are made to express yourself and it's kind of ssad to think that you need to sensor yourself all the time.

People really do need to be careful on what they post online. I always know that what goes on the internet will stay on the internet. I don't want to go for an interveiw years from now and have future employers see stuff the could hurt my chance at getting my dream job. I dn't think that I have anything on the internet that I don't want a future employer to see. But I deferntly will be more careful on what I post.

I feel like I am screwed now if anyone were to ever search me. Well, not exactly, but I guess I never really noticed how easy it is for someone to find things out about me. I don't post anything bad, or I don't try to, but things do get out there, whether I'm aware of it, or not. I really need to be careful now with what I post, or put out there. The thought of whatever I post being there forever is kind of frightening, and just really creepy. Anyone could look me up. I could have a stalker for all I know...

The internet is like a world of its own and if you're not careful with what you post, the damage will stay there forever. It's scary to think that deleting something is technically just saving it for later. Thinking about this freaks me out, which is why I'll continue to be cautious of what I post.

i don't really mind ,because i dont gonna post my private document on the internet just to let them know and see, something we need to be careful on what we say or gonna write aboy us self ,i would like to be more careful on what i write before to be sorry ,it better to be save than make amistake.

You know what, if you don't want somebody to see something you did on the internet, don't bother posting it. There is no real privacy, there is no safety. Everything you post on Facebook belongs to Facebook. Likewise, everything you write on Blogger, in this class, is public domain. So don't go treading through dirt if you're so worried about your "digital footprint".

it's littel scary thing ,becuse many people does publish things without thinking about what they are publishing.people shoulld be careful on what they are posting or publishing online.it's crazy and scary when someone publish things in the internet stay thier for ever.

Alexandra said...

is a little scary. but is good to know that if you post something is stay in the internet forever, so people know they have to be more carefully with posting crazy things.

Emily said...

You know, I never realized that future employers or whatever could do that! I am glad I know now, but I think that my digital footprint is pretty clean... at least, I hope it is.

A girl I used to work with got fired because she called in sick and had our manager on facebook, someone posted pictures of where she actually was and our manager saw. I pretty much always un-tag pictures I'm in on facebook because of that.

I guess I never realized that a lot of the things I'ved tweeted or made facebook status' about could turn back on me. If I was to apply for a job and my boss saw my digital footprint, my chances would go down quite a bit. How can the internet hold so much memory? There are millions of social networkers online on a daily basis. Well, I guess I'm adding to my footprint now, by pressing "Publish". Later Days! - Vince Munoz

Yeah I hate how people in our generation never think about what they put on the internet. You go on some people's facebook and its full of drinking and drug pictures. For me its okay if you do that, I'm not here to judge you, but why throw that all over the internet for everybody else to see and judge you on either? Be who you are, that's cool, but understand that there's consequences to your actions.

For me it's weird that people can be posting information about you without you even realizing it, and then there's literally almost no way for you to take it down. For instance, one of my friend's was recently posted on this horrible gossip site that's made solely for the purpose of hurting other people's reputations and she lost her job because of it, even though what was being said wasn't true. I think if you wouldn't say something to somebody in the real world there's no reason for you to say it on the internet.
